Despite swirling rain and howling winds, LSU pulled off a 30-10 victory against Tennessee in its first trip to Knoxville since 2011.
LSU was able to capitalize early in the game after two muffed punts by Tennessee’s Marquez Callaway and recovered both deep inside Volunteer territory.
The muffed punt sparked an LSU offense that struggled to move the ball on its first four drives, gaining 16 yards on 13 plays.
Senior running back Darrel Williams helped the Tigers reach the end zone in the second quarter on a 10-yard jet sweep. Williams then ripped off a 36-yard run late in the second quarter to set up a touchdown run by senior quarterback Danny Etling that capped off a 3 play, 61 yard drive.
Tennessee immediately matched LSU with a drive of its own. Tennessee’s Jarrett Guarantano connected with Callaway on back-to-back plays that accounted for 72 yards. LSU’s junior cornerback Donte Jackson lost his footing and was beat by Callaway for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Redshirt freshman kicker Connor Culp tried to add another three points to the scoreboard for LSU right before halftime, but his kick was off of the upright. Culp finished 1-for-3 on the night.
The kicking game was once again beneficial for LSU right out of halftime. With lights out in the stadium and a torrential downpour present, Callaway lost sight of a bouncing kick by senior Cameron Gamble before diving on it at the 3 yard line.
After a three-and-out by Tennessee, LSU rode junior tailback Derrius Guice to the end zone for his 10th touchdown of the season.
Guice surpassed 1,000 rushing yards this season and is the fifth player in LSU history to do so in back-to-back seasons.
LSU was again given a scoring opportunity after stopping Guarantano on fourth down on Tennessee’s 21 yard line. Two plays later, Williams scored his second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run.
The Tigers bled the clock in the final minutes as Williams’ touchdown sealed the win.
LSU will host Texas A&M next Saturday in Tiger Stadium.
