After a couple weeks of enjoyable playlists that lacked my enthusiasm, I discovered a new musician this week who rewoke my excitement for instrumental music. Kaki King is a female mostly solo guitarist who has been playing guitar, then drums, then guitar again since she was 4 years old. Her music is moving, fluid, dreamy, and speaks to you in her lovely unspoken language. Finding her song Gay Songs of Lesbian Mothers spurred me to listen to many of her albums, explore the music of the artists who inspired her (Preston Reed, Michael Hedges) and dive into a refreshing sub-genre of my ‘instrumental’ label.
I only have a few weeks left playing my music through the airwaves of KLSU until I graduate but I hope to incorporate the guitar licks that swept me up this week.
I’ve included a few videos of both Kaki King and the musician Jack Dawson, who’s music isn’t on spotify since I got a burned demo CD from him when I heard him busking close to the Sydney Opera House in Australia when I was hitchhiking there a few years back. He’s another talented guitar musician. Enjoy!
