After a hard-fought loss to Kentucky and a loss to the hands of Tennessee at home, LSU scrambled to collect a road win against Arkansas.
In the victory, there were areas of vulnerability exposed that the Tigers will need to improve on as the regular season begins to wind down.
“I don’t want to say it was a ‘must-win,’ but it was an important win,” coach Fran Flory said. “Not only because we beat a very good team with a high RPI, but because we had to get back on track. I am super proud of the way our team responded and the tenacity that they showed once again.”
With the recent struggles and lack of top-tier opponents down the road, the surfacing question for the Tigers now is if they are a team that can achieve success in the postseason against the more elite, quality opponents.
Having played through a much improved Southeastern Conference this season, LSU has seen all levels of competition and proved to be a capable team.
“People raised an eyebrow at if we were really legit,” Flory said. “[The Arkansas game] proved that that is not the case and we are legit. This is a really solid team and I think we understand that as well from our perspective.”
Resilience has been a motto for this team throughout the entire season. The Tigers have found a way to fight and claw their way back from bleak situations throughout the season, even in the most recent win against Arkansas.
With dropping two home games back-to-back, the team has established an even greater sense of urgency to finish the season as strong as possible.
“We are headed right where we need to be headed,” Flory said. “They do understand the urgency we need every time we step on the court because the SEC is so much stronger. This is probably the most efficient year that we’ve ever had.”
From the beginning of the season, LSU set a high expectation for itself with an 8-0 start. Starting the season as fast as they did, the Tigers set the tone for what they expect to accomplish this season.
“The fast start really set the tone knowing how our confidence build up and realizing how good of a team we really are and how we need to believe in ourselves,” senior outside hitter Gina Tillis said. “We just need to keep working in practice and getting even better as a team each week.”
As the end of the regular season approaches, a constant reminder for the team is to continue to get better and improve on the small details.
“Right now, we are just cleaning up the small things that we know we did at the beginning of the season,” Tillis said. “As we keep doing that, we are gradually increasing our play for the end of the season.”
