The LSU Tigers beat the Georgia Bulldogs 2-1 on Thursday night while wearing pink in honor of their “Boot Breast Cancer” event to spread breast cancer awareness as well as pay tribute to breast cancer victims and survivors.
“It’s a personal touch for me,” coach Brian Lee said. “My mom’s a breast cancer survivor, so it’s an important night for us and I really think our girls embraced it.”
This 1-0 win gave the Tigers their first conference victory to improve their overall record to 8-2-2 (1-2-2 SEC). The victory moves LSU to ninth overall in the conference.
Both teams played an even game with 11 shots a piece and LSU having only one more shot on goal than Georgia with seven. The score reflected the even matchup staying at a 1-1 tie for most of the game after both teams scored within a minute of each other in the first half.
Freshman Lucy Parker scored the first goal of the game and her third of the season off an assist from sophomore Marlena Cutura in the 35th minute of the first half. Georgia midfielder Daria Stan then tied it up off of a penalty kick.
The Tigers then had to dig deep through a physical second half until junior Alex Thomas put the Tigers ahead in the 87th minute with her seventh goal of the year.
“It’s the last five minutes or so,” Thomas said. “I saw Lucy and I passed it to her and I just took off. I knew she was going to find me again.”
The Tigers have struggled this year in conference play holding on to leads and scoring late.
“We have a group that we feel like are high character kids and when they get the opportunity they’re going to give their best effort and keep fighting through to the last whistle,” Lee said.
On looking ahead, Thomas said, “This win is the first step. Now we just got to worry about one game at a time. So the next game, Ole Miss, that’s all we need to worry about right now.”
The Tigers are set to play the Ole Miss Rebels (9-3-1, 2-3-0 SEC) in Oxford on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the SEC Network+.
