Coming off its first home loss to conference-foe Kentucky, the LSU volleyball team looked to regroup against Tennessee. With both teams coming off five-set losses, each team desperately needed to collect a win to get back on the right track.
The Tigers (16-6, 7-4 Southeastern Conference) fell behind as Tennessee (11-9, 4-7 SEC) stormed back in the first set to take an early match lead over LSU.
Following the first set, LSU never seemed to establish a steady rhythm throughout the match and Tennessee never looked back.
“We got out-disciplined,” LSU coach Fran Flory said. “We scored enough points. We got beat in three (sets) and they scored one more point than we did. It should be a close match and it wasn’t because we did not take care of the ball. We gave away more than we earned today.”
Flat play by the Tigers dug the team into a hole they could not come out of. However, Flory expressed her disdain towards what she believed to be a lack of effort on her team’s part.”
“I’m disappointed,” Flory said. “This is the first time I’m really disappointed in our team’s effort and attitude and approach this year. We’ve got to rebound and get back into a rhythm and we have to trust what we’re doing a little more.”
With this loss, LSU drops its second home game of the season and falls to 5-2 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
The Tigers will prepare to face the Arkansas Razorbacks (15-7, 5-5 in SEC) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. In the last meeting against the Razorbacks, LSU prevailed in five sets in Baton Rouge.
“This team is a really good team,” Flory said. “This doesn’t change where we’re gonna be in postseason. This doesn’t change our opportunities, but it puts a little more pressure on what we have left.”
