As season starts to gear up, basketball coaches from around the Southeastern Conference gathered in Nashville for media day. LSU’s women’s basketball representatives were coach Nikki Fargas, senior guard Raigyne Moncrief and sophomore forward Ayana Mitchell.
LSU to retire Sylvia Fowles’ Jersey on November 12
At the SEC Tipoff, Fargas announced that Lady Tigers basketball legend Sylvia Fowles’ jersey will be retired at a home game on November 12 at 2 p.m. against Southeastern.
“On November 12, we have got a home game and we just want to tell Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus that we are proud of them,” she said.
LSU had previously announced that Fowles’ jersey was going to be retired this season, but this was the first time that the date was mentioned.
Moncrief’s busy summer
Over the summer, Moncrief became Raigyne Moncrief-Louis when she married former LSU linebacker Lamar Louis.
Moncrief-Louis traveled to Italy with LSU and Jamaica on her honeymoon. She took two online classes over the summer.
“It was a busy offseason,” she said. “When I was on vacation, I did some of the class, and I got ahead on my work.”
Moncrief-Louis is the returning SEC defensive player of the year.
“She is more than just a basketball player for us,” Fargas said.
Size in the post
One of the big changes for the Lady Tigers over the offseason has been an increase in post size.
LSU adds freshmen center Faustine Aifuwa and forward Raven Farley-Clark into the post with Mitchell. Last season, LSU played only two players taller than six feet last season in more than 10 games.
“We were an itty bitty little team, and now we are going to be one of the biggest teams in our league,” Fargas said.
