Each Sunday in October through the first Sunday in November, bring your friends, family and favorite lawn chair to sit back and start your week right with smooth jams and grub.
The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge provides a free, family-friendly event at the Shaw Center for the Arts Plaza for all members of the community to gather. Sunday in the Park, held in both the fall and the spring, was developed to showcase the various talents of Louisiana culture.
This year, the event has returned to its original venue where it first began nearly 10 years ago after being held near the riverfront this past season.
For the rest of this season, the event will see funk, pop, country and rock artists, with The Mulligan Brothers on schedule for the upcoming performance Oct. 22. The council tries to have a lineup as diverse as possible to represent the multifaceted local music scene, Arts Council President and CEO Renee Chatelain said.
The Mulligan Brothers are a self-proclaimed Americana, folk-rock band hailing from Mobile, Alabama. The group coined their name from the golf-term “mulligan,“ meaning a second shot. Thus far, the group has released two albums, and its most recent single, “Divine Design,” debuted in 2016. Its folk sound, created with violins, acoustic guitars and drums coupled with lead singer Ross Newell’s vocals, gives listeners a sense of familial comfort.
Although Alabama natives, The Mulligan Brothers’ blues style complements the Capital City’s culture. Universal Language will be next in the line-up Oct. 29, and 90 Degrees West rounds out the event for this season Nov. 5.
Surrounding the event, Capital City Grill Downtown, Stroubes Seafood Steaks and the Manship Theatre at Shaw Center for the Arts will provide refreshments, including a full bar.
“[Ultimately], it’s a great place to hang out on a Sunday afternoon,” Chatelain said.
