Baton Rouge Police Department Chief Carl Dabadie is retiring, city Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome confirmed in a press conference Monday morning.
“Chief Dabadie is an honorable man and I will continue to say that,” Broome said at the conference. “He has served our city as police chief. Many people appreciate, certainly, his contribution to law enforcement.”
Dabadie submitted his letter of resignation to Broome July 24.
Dabadie also issued a personal statement in addition to his letter of resignation.
“Serving as Baton Rouge Police Chief has been the honor of my lifetime and the decision to retire did not come easily,” Dabadie said in the prepared statement.
“Unfortunately, I am in a situation that will not serve our police department or the citizens of Baton Rouge,” he said.
In his letter to Broome, Dabadie hints at his strained relationship with the mayor-president, according to The Advocate.
Broome’s promise to hire a new police chief was a cornerstone of her campaign, but due to civil service protections, was unable to act.
BRPD Lt. Jonny Dunnam has been appointed interim chief while the search for a permanent chief is conducted.
Dabadie will use accrued leave time until his retirement goes into effect on Oct. 2. Dabadie was appointed police chief in 2013 by former Mayor-President Kip Holden.
