Nine of the 13 players that did not travel with LSU to New Orleans vs. BYU returned Saturday night for the Tiger’s home opener.
Senior linebacker Donnie Alexander, who did not travel with the team last weekend, started at middle linebacker next to sophomore linebacker Devin White.
White and Alexander each recorded seven tackles in the first half.
The Mocs opening offensive drive resulted in a 22-yard field goal and was the first points allowed on LSU’s defense this season.
The Tigers answered with a touch 36-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Danny Etling to sophomore wide receiver Drake Davis.
The play action pass left Davis wide open in the end zone for his first career touchdown.
Chattanooga regained possession and gained 33 yards before senior safety John Battle and White sacked the Mocs’ quarterback, Nick Tiano.
The sack set up a 46-yard catch by sophomore wide receiver Stephen Sullivan.
Junior running back Derrius Guice then scored from the 1-yard line to give LSU a 14-3 lead in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, an interception by freshman cornerback Greedy Williams set up another Guice touchdown.
During the drive, Guice broke 2,000 career rushing yards.
Williams earned the starting nod for the second game in a row over junior cornerback Kevin Toliver who did not travel with the team against BYU.
Senior wide receiver DJ Clark returned a punt for 63-yards to give LSU a 28-3 lead with 3:22 left in the half.
Earlier, Chark had returned a punt to the endzone, but a flag on the play called the touchdown back.
The last Tiger to return a punt for a touchdown, have it called back, then return another for a touchdown in the same game was Odell Beckham Jr. vs UNT in 2012.
Two more true freshman saw action during the first half, wide receiver JaCoby Stevens and full back Tory Carter.
Stevens recorded his first reception — a 27 yard pass near the LSU sideline.
Penalties once again strained the Tigers offense despite the 28 points. LSU drew five flags in the first quarter that costed them 39 yards. The team was called for five more penalties in the second quarter for another 30 yards.
