Students will have another alternative for leaving campus this week after the football game this Saturday when LSU Student Government brings back the Post-Game Shuttle Bus service.
The service, first created by last year’s executive SG board, is a partnership between SG and LSU Parking & Transportation Services. It is available to any student who pays $5 and signs up online.
“Last year’s administrative group, [former SG president Zack Faircloth and former SG director of transportation Charles Mock Jr.], it was their brainchild to offer this to students,” said Senior Director of Parking & Transportation Services Jeff Campbell.
The idea stemmed from the alleviation of the number of cars on campus, as well as concentrating the way students were being transported to and from campus to lessen the load of individual car traffic, Campbell said.
Campbell said the service was received well by students last year, as they did not realize how quickly they would be able to leave campus and be back to their off-campus apartments.
“What ended up happening was, as soon as the bus got loaded up, [the bus driver] would let the [Baton Rouge Police Department] know,” Campbell said. “They would clear the path for the buses to jump ahead of all the other traffic and get the students to their destination a little bit quicker.”
Because the post-game buses only leave after a home football game has ended, an observation Campbell made over the duration of last season was that many students were leaving the games earlier, even if they had already purchased a ride home on the bus. This left many buses emptier than anticipated toward the end of the season, Campbell said.
“The first game, it was pretty well used,” Campbell said. “But then as the season went on, students were like … ‘I’m just going to go ahead and leave.’”
Campbell also said SG has decided to bring back the initiative this year with no initial changes, but there is a possibility for some in the future.
Parking and Transportation Services allots four buses to be used for this program, Campbell said. The buses travel a Burbank-Ben Hur route and an Alvin Dark-River Road route.
On the Burbank-Ben Hur route, the bus stops at University Crescent, Burbank Commons, Arlington Cottages & Townhomes, The Exchange, Woodlands of Baton Rouge and The Lodges at 777.
On the Alvin Dark-River Road route, the bus has stops at corners of Alvin Dark Avenue, Jim Taylor Drive, Sharlo Avenue, Brightside View Drive, Blox at Brightside, The Villas on Brightside, Brightside Manor and Campus Crossings at Brightside. Both routes begin at the corner of South Stadium Drive and Nicholson Drive.
“I think it’s a great service, especially for students that do plan to stay for the duration of the game,” Campbell said.
Students interested in signing up for the Post-Game Shuttle Bus service can find full route maps and reserve their spot on the SG website.
