The Tigers shut out an opponent for the first time since 2014.
Dave Aranda’s defense held the Cougars to 97 total yards and negative five yards rushing. LSU limited BYU to six first downs, and did not allow BYU to cross midfield once in the game.
“I’m proud of our football team,” Orgeron said. “I’m proud of our coaching staff and their preparation all week and the way they prepared this football team.”
The defense relied on a mixture of freshmen and veterans. Redshirt freshman cornerback Andraez Williams forced the only turnover of the game when he intercepted Tanner Mangum in the second quarter.
Williams was one of four freshmen — along with linebackers K’Lavon Chaisson and Tyler Taylor and safety Grant Delpit — to start the game.
One of the few seniors to start for LSU was outside linebacker Corey Thompson. Thompson made his presence known early in the game, and finished with three tackles and two sacks.
Offensively the Tigers were led by junior running back Derrius Guice. Guice finished with 27 carries, 125 yards and two touchdowns.
When Heisman hopeful was not in the game, senior running back Darrel Williams hammered away at the Cougar defense. Williams ran for 92 yards on 15 carries and scored one touchdown. The Tigers finished with 294 rushing yards, and the dominant run game helped open up the passing game for senior quarterback Danny Etling.
“We are going to do whatever the defense is going to give us,” Etling said. They dared us to run the ball and we did it. We are going to establish the run, and we are going to be a team that doesn’t back down from a challenge. That was what they gave us and we took it.
Etling was more than efficient, completing 14 of his 17 passes for 173 yards. In the second quarter Etling hit senior receiver D.J. Chark down field for a 52 yard gain to set up Guice’s second touchdown.
Etling also connected with sophomore Derrick Dillon twice on third and long to extend drives.
With the win, the Tigers add to its impressive 54-1 record against non-conference opponents since 2002.
LSU return to Tiger Stadium next Saturday, and will play Chattanooga at 6:30 p.m.
