For over three decades, Tiger Stadium and The Pete Maravich Assembly Center have had the same voice calling the plays.
I got a chance to sit down with Borne’ this week, to ask how it feels to be the voice of the Tigers.
“I will borrow a line from Shakespeare,” Borne’ said. “The play is the thing, the play is the thing.”
“In the end, the less said the better. No one comes to hear me. People want to know who carried the ball and who made the tackle,” he said.
“The P.A. Announcer should never be the center of attention. it is supplemental and informational to the game,” Borne’ said, on his involvement in the game.
When I asked Borne’ about his thoughts on the rain, he said, he came up with the quote on accident, and fans seemed to love it.
“It happened by accident,” Borne’ said. “One night, without really thinking much about it, I said ‘The chance of rain, never.'”
“But now it is written in to the lore and people expect it. In fact people scream it back to me,” he said.
With all that time spent in Tiger Stadium, I just had to ask. Was there any play that stood out above the rest?
“Ed Kennison’s punt return, 100 yards,” Borne’ said.
“One he (Kennison) put his hands on it he knew, he wasn’t running for a touchdown, he was running for his life,” Borne’ said.
Whether it is Football on the grass, or Basketball on the hardwood, for the Tigers, you will be sure to hear Dan Borne’ calling the action.
