LSU Media spokesman Ernie Ballard said Gruver’s death was potentially the result of hazing by Phi Delta Theta.
LSU President F. King Alexander said all University Greek Life activities will be suspended while the investigation is underway. Alexander confirmed alcohol was involved in the incident and that no arrests have been made at this point.
“We at the LSU community are grieving today. The death of Maxwell Gruver was tragic and untimely,” Alexander said. “As we have continually warned over and over again, hazing is dangerous, irresponsible and unacceptable. It will not be tolerated at LSU.”

Update 5:25 p.m.: The LSU chapter of Phi Delta Theta has been suspended by the national Phi Delta Theta organization.
Executive Vice President and CEO Bob Biggs issued the following statement:
“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gruver family, and all who knew Max, during this very difficult time. We’re committed to investigating this situation thoroughly. The chapter and any individuals who are found to have violated our policies will be held accountable.”

Gruver was a University student according the LSU Directory.

18-year-old Maxwell Gruver died Thursday according to East Baton Rouge Coroner Beau Clark. He was transported from a fraternity house to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. The autopsy will be conducted Friday, according to Clark.
LSUPD and investigators are currently at the Phi Delta Theta house.

A person was transported from an LSU fraternity house and brought to a hospital where the person was pronounced dead Thursday, according to the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s office.
LSU Media Relations confirmed LSUPD is investigating the incident that happened Wednesday night and will report as soon as information becomes available.
