In Sunday’s game against Liberty University, the LSU Tigers put away its purple and gold in exchange for teal uniforms in support of ovarian cancer awareness.
The Tigers played lackadaisically, and missed opportunities throughout the game until freshman forward Lucy Parker scored the game winner in the 86th minute. The shot came from beyond the penalty area, and bounced right off the top crossbar into the goal.
Parker got to score the game winner in front of her mom who flew all the way from their home in Cambridge, England to surprise Lucy right before the game.
“It was pretty special.” Parker said, “I see her right before the game and didn’t know she was here so it gave me that bit of extra motivation.”
Coach Brian Lee was not too worried about the slow start, crediting the cancelled game against Central Florida for the rust.
“The worry about the slow start is not having a game in a week when we lost that Central Florida game,” Lee said. “We really got out of rhythm, and it’s so hard to replicate match type intensity in practice. So we’re half expecting to be a little flat to be honest – hopeful we’re not – but a little bit expecting and just hoping we can play our way into the game, and I thought we got stronger and stronger as the game progressed.”
Besides Parker, freshman forward Tinaya Alexander showed finesse and skill on the ball. Alexander dribbled her way through three defenders the entire game, taking the pressure of the the Tiger defense, which was key to victory.
Junior goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier once again held another opponent scoreless, and increased her clean sheet tally to five on the season.
“Honestly it’s all about staying focused throughout the day,” Brockmeier said. “Brian [Lee] does a great job of preparing us for the opponent.”
