As University students move into their new homes on campus for the upcoming semester, they were joined by Harvey, a young tiger who could potentially succeed Mike VI as the official mascot of the University.
Harvey is an 11-month-old male tiger who arrived on campus Aug. 15. The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine began searching for a new tiger after Mike VI was euthanized last October following a battle with cancer.
Harvey is not Mike VII yet. He is being housed in the night house of the tiger habitat, and must remain there for at least one week. During this time, he will be observed by University veterinarians to ensure he is healthy and a good fit for the University. If this quarantine passes without incident, Harvey will be formally introduced as Mike VII.
Harvey was donated to the University by a sanctuary in Okeechobee, Florida, called “Wild at Heart Wildlife Center.” This follows the pattern established with the donation of Mike IV. Mike IV, V and VI were all donated to the University from rescue facilities. The University has not purchased a tiger since Mike III in 1958.
Harvey’s habitat and LSU’s animal care plan are licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The facility, tiger and animal care programs are annually inspected to ensure compliance with the Federal Animal Welfare Act and other USDA policies and guidelines.
