Caleb Lewis and Jonathan Rucker can no longer be called walk-ons.
Both players received scholarships from coach Ed Orgeron on Friday. The former walk-ons are taking LSU’s last two remaining scholarships, bringing the team up to the maximum 85 scholarship limit for the upcoming season.
Lewis is a redshirt sophomore quarterback who decided to walk on to LSU in 2015 over offers from Buffalo, Florida International and Ohio. The Lakeland, Florida native has received some second team reps at quarterback in the fall according to Orgeron.
Rucker was one of LSU’s leading special teamers last season. As a junior, Rucker recorded seven tackles after returning from a torn ACL he suffered during his sophomore season. The fifth-year linebacker has also found his way into the Tigers’ middle linebacker rotation.
With limited depth at the spot, Rucker received first team reps next to sophomore Devin White in spring practice. During LSU’s spring game this past April, Rucker was credited with one sack.
Rucker showed enough at the spot during the spring and fall practices that Orgeron said on Thursday that he would feel comfortable if Rucker received live reps at the spot in the regular season.
“A guy that has had a really solid camp, been a solid player for us all year, and I haven’t talked to him about it, is Jonathan Rucker,” Orgeron said. “I think Jonathan is going to start on most special teams and can go in there and play for us at linebacker.”
