With Hurricane Harvey bearing down on the Texas Gulf Coast, the status of LSU’s game against BYU in Houston on September 2 has come into question.
“First and foremost, our thoughts and best wishes are with our neighbors in South Texas and of course with our friends and family here in South Louisiana as Hurricane Harvey draws near,” the school said in a statement. “We know all too well the challenges of facing a storm of this magnitude and stand ready to assist in any way we can.”
Harvey is expected to make landfall either Friday night or early Saturday morning as a category three hurricane. It will be the first category three hurricane to make landfall in the United States since 2005.
The storm is projected to cut back east across Texas, and stall near Houston before moving towards southwest Louisiana.
“The season-opening football game against BYU in Houston September 2nd remains as scheduled. We are actively monitoring the situation in South Texas and will be in regular contact with Houston officials and NRG Stadium representatives to fully assess conditions on the ground while keeping a close eye on developments here in Louisiana as the storm unfolds.”
For the past two seasons LSU’s season has been affected by weather. In 2015, LSU’s opening game against McNesse State was cancelled due to lightening, and an October matchup against South Carolina was moved to Baton Rouge after historic flooding in South Carolina.
Last season, LSU’s game against Florida was moved from Gainesville to Baton Rouge after controversy surrounding the affects that Hurricane Matthew could have on the game. The game was pushed back into November, which resulted in LSU cancelling its game with South Alabama.
