LSU to hold last big scrimmage before regular season
The Tigers will play their third preseason scrimmage on Saturday. The scrimmage is expected to last 70 plays for each group plus some two minute and overtime situations.
Coach Ed Orgeron wants the team to focus on situations for Saturday’s scrimmage and believes the scrimmage will say a lot.
LSU intends to start positioning players where they’ll be in game situations at practice next week and the scrimmage will go a long way in determining the depth chart.
“We’re going to work short yardage, goal line and red zone,” Orgeron said. “We feel like we can run the ball well and our passing game is catching up and we’ve been working hard on protection.”
Orgeron stated he expects most of Offensive coordinator Matt Canada’s offense to be installed by the end of Friday in anticipation for Saturday’s scrimmage.
“His goal was to complete everything by this Saturday,” Orgeron said. “A few things we can put in next week but for the most part our offense will be done by tomorrow.”
Key not expected to be ready for BYU
Orgeron said he does not expect junior defensive end Arden Key will be ready for the season opener on September 2 against BYU
“I’m not expecting it,” Orgeron said. “But nothing that dude does surprises me. He’s going to go to his doctor next week and we should know pretty soon when he’s going to be able to play.”
Orgeron added that Key is ahead of schedule when it comes to his rehab and there has been no setback.
“He was doing some things today,” Orgeron said. “He was taking on blocks I just don’t know when he’s going to be ready. He’s not hitting, just been going through some walkthrough stuff.”
Freshmen Ray Thornton and K’Lavon Chaisson figure to be the potential replacements in Key’s absence.
Deep freshman class excites Orgeron
When asked about the depth of the freshman class, Orgeron said it has been a very good class with many standouts.
“We’ve got a good class,” Orgeron said. “I’ve said that time and time again.”
Orgeron feels that many freshmen could start on the offense and defensive sides of the ball and he would have no problems with that.
“If Austin Deculus, Saahdiq Charles and Ed Ingram are starting I have no problem,” Orgeron said. “They’re physical, they’re smart and they’re well coached.”
Chaisson, Kary Vincent Jr. and Tyler Taylor were amongst the defensive freshmen Orgeron stated as guys who could receive major playing time this season.
