This past weekend, LSU’s track and field teams took center stage at the Auburn Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
LSU was led by an array of individual performances, including senior thrower Johnnie Jackson, senior distance runner Blair Henderson, and senior distance runner Morgan Schuetz.
Jackson, who made his season debut, became the NCAA season leader for the weight throw with a throw of 77 feet, 3 ¾ inches besting the runner-up by almost 10 feet. The throw is Jackson’s personal best, and ranks second all-time in the event.
Henderson finished first in the men’s 800-meter with a time of one minute, 49.20 seconds.
Henderson’s time ranks him fourth in the country for the 2017 season.
Henderson teamed up with sophomore Dajour Braxton, junior Jack White, and freshman Harrison Martingayle to win the men’s distance medley with a time of 10 minutes, six seconds.
Schuetz dominated the women’s 800-meter winning by close to six seconds with a time of two minutes, 4.79 seconds. Schuetz’s time currently ranks third nationally as she looks to contend for a national championship in the 800-meter.
As team the Lady Tigers finished as champions in the four team field that included Alabama, Ohio State, and Auburn.
The Lady Tigers finished with 151 points narrowly beating out Alabama who finished with 150 points. Ohio State was third with 101 points, while Auburn finished last with 89 points.
The men’s side did not fare as well as the Lady Tigers. The Tigers completed the event with 104.5 points trailing winner Alabama, 127.5 points, and Auburn, 112 points. Ohio State closed out the field with 82 points.
After a strong start to the season, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, next weekend to compete in the Razorback Invitational.
