Every day the LSU triathlon club is hard at work training for three different sports and hoping to achieve success in just one race.
In order to qualify for the national triathlon meet every year, The Tigers have traveled all the way to Austin, Texas for the regional championship in hopes of qualifying for the national triathlon meet this year. The triathletes tirelessly train for the grueling Olympic Distance every week.
“Our favorite race is probably our regional championship, which is the Bevoman Triathlon in Austin, Texas,” said triathlon club president Denise Davies.
An Olympic distance triathlon consists of a 1500 meter swim, a 40k bike ride and a 10k run. With the right work ethic and a positive attitude anyone is welcome join the club and become a great triathlete, Davies said.
“Anyone can definitely do it, you have to put in the work,” Davies said. “It’s about putting one foot in front of the other and finishing.”
Every year, the club sends members to te USA triathlon collegiate club national championships and this year they hope to send a considerable number of athletes to compete with some of the nations best triathletes. Last year, the meet was in Clemson, South Carolina, but this year it’s a bit closer to home with the competition being hosted in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
“Hopefully we’re going to be sending about 15 people there,” Davies said.
This year they’re welcoming a new coach that isn’t as new as one might think. Mark Primeaux competed on the professional circuit for some time after starting with the club, and now he’s back to coach others to be even better than he was.
“The first triathlons I did were as an LSU student.” Primeaux said.
LSU’s next meet is at the “Mean Green Triathlon,” in Denton, Texas at the University of North Texas Campus on March 19th. Starting gun fires at 8:45 am.
