Even with LSU gymnastics’ undefeated start, coach D-D Breaux still sees room for improvement.
LSU is coming off a home win against Texas Woman’s with a score of 197.475-192.625. On Friday, the team will face No. 6 Kentucky on the road.
“We want to keep our scoring level at the optimum level and we also want to get better,” Breaux said. “Right now the margin for us to get better is very narrow, but the margin for us to trip up and do poorly is big.”
Breaux took the opportunity to display the LSU team’s depth against Texas Woman’s.
Freshman all-arounder Ruby Harrold made her debut on both the floor and bars, while junior all-arounder Myia Hambrick added a half twist to her vault to give it a 10.0 start value. With freshmen Kennedi Edney exhibitioning on the floor, both she and sophomore all-arounder Sarah Finnegan were able to compete in all four events.
“The performance was a great team effort,” Breaux said about the changes. “We took the opportunity to change our lineup up a bit and try to exercise our depth and develop. We talked to the team about the depth we have but unless we are willing to take someone out of a lineup and compete someone new we’re not really deep.”
This week, LSU is ranked No.1 on vault and No.2 on bars and floor in the NCAA.
Kentucky is coming off a win against No.16 Auburn 197.100-195.800, which was the first time in program history the Wildcats have broken 197.
LSU faced Kentucky in the PMAC last season in a 196.575-195.100 win.
“It’s always nice to be competing in the SEC and it’s great to be able to get on the road,” senior all-arounder Ashleigh Gnat said. “We’re excited to get on the road and head to Kentucky and just really show every body what we’ve been practicing and how hard we’ve been working.”
Despite their confidence, the Tigers know this isn’t going to be an easy win. The team ismotivated to improveeach week.
“They’ve got some pretty impressive scores and some individual team rankings on the events that are pretty close to some of our averages so I’m looking forward to a great competition in a place that traditionally pretty hard to compete,” Breaux said.
