In its third straight appearance in the Women’s College World Series, the LSU softball team stunned No. 5 UCLA 2-1 to move on to the winner’s bracket.
Coming off of two straight wins in the super regional to defeat Florida State, LSU used its momentum to pull off another win in the NCAA tournament.
The two powerhouse offenses were limited in action during Thursday’s contest thanks to the pitching on both sides. LSU produced two runs on six hits and junior pitcher Allie Walljasper held the Bruins to just one run on eight hits.
Heading into the WCWS, UCLA won 18 of its last 19 games.
Facing the NFCA freshman of the year, Rachel Garcia, junior outfielder Emily Griggs led off the game with a double off the centerfield wall.
In the two-hole spot, senior catcher Sahvanna Jaquish did what she does best to score Griggs with a double of her own and recorded her 268th RBI.
Jaquish earned her fourth All-American honor on Wednesday, becoming the first player in the program’s history to earn the honor all four years.
LSU held on to its 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third after an RBI groundout tied the score 1-1, but a fly ball to senior right fielder Bailey Landry would end the inning to minimize the damage.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead on a controversial call involving senior second baseman Constance Quinn and the Bruins’ catcher.
The umpire called obstruction on the catcher, ruling Quinn safe at home plate. The RBI single from sophomore shortstop Amber Serrett would solidify the win for the Tigers as Walljasper shut down the Bruins’ offense in the final two innings.
Five different Tigers picked up a hit in the game and Quinn went 2-for-3 at the plate.
LSU (48-20) will face Florida (55-8) for the first time this season on Friday in the winner’s bracket of the WCWS.
