LSU football has been hot on the recruiting trail as of late.
The Tigers put a vise grip on the No. 3 overall class in the country and the No. 1 class in the Southeastern Conference with commitments from multiple recruits over the past weekend.
Perhaps the biggest names are a duo from Ferriday High School named Dare Rosenthal and Dantreize Scott.
Rosenthal, a 6-foot-7, four-star defensive tackle, will help LSU solidify its defensive line moving forward once veterans like seniors Christian LaCouture and Greg Gilmore depart after next season. Rosenthal’s versatility and athleticism along with his massive size and frame will make an instant impact for the Tiger’s defense.
Rosenthal expressed his reasons for committing to Gridiron Now when he said, ”That was where my heart was.” While his recruitment is not complete, LSU is his next home for now, Rosenthal said.
Dantrieze Scott, Rosenthal’s high school teammate, committed to LSU soon after attending LSU’s OL/DL camp. At 6-foot-5, the tight end has a chance to play immediately with former tight end Colin Jeter gone.
Scott caught the attention of many of the current players on the roster and coaches with his camp performance, especially defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. There is a possibility Scott will get reps at the outside linebacker position, which has been a pivotal position in LSU’s new 3-4 defensive scheme.
LSU also strengthened its signing class of 2019 with commitments from offensive tackle Thomas Perry and running back Tyrion Davis.
Teurlings’ Catholic (Lafayette, La) offensive tackle Thomas Perry (6 feet 6, 330 pounds committed to the Tigers after an impressive day at LSU’s OL/DL camp, similar to Dantrieze Scott and Dare Rosenthal’s commitments. Perry was the sixth commitment to join LSU’s 2019 signing class and third offensive line member to commit.
Tyrion Davis shocked LSU’s staff when he decided to commit to LSU as quickly as he did. The explosive back from Southern Lab High School was expected to have a decision by the end of the summer, not the middle of June.
“I usually go with my gut,” Davis said in regards to his commitment. “Nowhere else better than home. That’s where I’m going. That’s my team.”
Davis concluded his sophomore year with 1,200 yards rushing on 72 carries, averaging 16 yards per carry. He capped off the year by leading his team to a 36-9 victory in the Division IV title game with 244 yards on only eight carries.
His performance broke the Division IV/Class 1A record previously held by White Castle’s Tyre Bracken in 2010.
Following Davis’ commitment, the Tigers received a commitment from standout Florida running back Chris Curry on June 22 during an elite prospect camp at LSU and completely shut down his recruiting process.
The most recent recruit to join the Tigers for the 2017 signing class was Justin Jefferson on June 23, a wide receiver out of Destrehan High School.
Jefferson is the youngest of three brothers which includes former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and former defensive back Rickey Jefferson. Jefferson joins the 2017 recruiting class after waiting a long time to receive an offer from LSU.
Jefferson will join a young receiving corps this season led by senior DJ Chark.
“After being around there for so long and my brothers being there, it felt like home for the past eight years,” Jefferson told SEC Country. “Coach O–he always talks to me. He’s a cool coach, and with all the different coaches coming through, they were cool and been talking to me. It seemed good. It seemed like I fit in.”
