Jared Poche led the No. 4 LSU baseball team to its 17th straight win against Florida State, but he also made history for himself.
The senior pitcher earned the 38th win of his career, tying the all-time record for LSU.
Poche entered the game in relief for senior pitcher Alex Lange in the top of the seventh inning to earn the win.
With the 2.2 innings pitched in Saturday night’s game, Poche is likely to pitch again on Monday against Oregon State in relief for freshman pitcher Eric Walker.
The Tigers rallied back in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the 5-4 lead and advance to the winner’s bracket.
Junior first baseman Nick Coomes returned to the lineup for the first time since the first game of the regional tournament against Texas Southern and his presence surely made a difference.
Coomes went 2-for-2 at the plate to help lift LSU over Florida State.
The Seminoles took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run home run in the first inning.
The Tigers answered with a strange play that cut the lead to 2-1.
Sophomore left fielder Duplantis was running on the pitch to steal second base when junior right fielder Greg Deichmann struck out on a wild pitch that rolled into foul territory allowing Deichmann to reach first base safely and Duplantis to score.
Before the Tigers could get too close, the Seminoles extended their lead 3-1 on a double and an RBI single.
Duplantis put the Tigers within one run again on an RBI single in the bottom of the third.
Once again, FSU stretched the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth.
Junior catcher Michael Papierski came up big with a solo home run to keep LSU in the game and pulling within one run.
The Tigers bounced back in the bottom of the eighth inning on a single by Duplantis that was followed by a fielding error and a throwing error by the Seminoles defense.
Deichmann sealed the win on an RBI single which would give LSU its first opening game win of the College World Series since 2009.
LSU will face No. 1 Oregon State at 6 p.m. on Monday as the home team.
