The LSU women’s golf team finished the Tiger/Wave classic in fourth place after closing out the tournament in less than stellar fashion, shooting 31-over par for the final two rounds of the tournament at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans.
LSU finished with a 37-over 901 for the tournament.Junior Megan McChrystal did her fair share to keep LSU in contention with a consistent performance good enough to win the individual title at the event. McChrystal shot even-par the first two days of the Tiger/Wave Classic before going low on the final day with a 3-under 69.It was McChrystal’s third victory of her distinguished career, and she sealed it in dramatic fashion. The Stuart, Fla., native birdied the final hole of the tournament to secure a one-stroke victory over Virginia junior Calle Nielson. The Lady Tigers also received a solid performance from sophomore Tessa Teachman, who finished the tournament in fifth place after shooting a 4-over 220.Teachman led the field after shooting a 2-under 70 the first day, and closed out the tournament with back-to-back 3-over 75s.The rest of the Lady Tigers struggled to find a groove in the windy conditions throughout the tournament. Sophomore Jacqueline Hedwall and junior Amalie Valle both finished the tournament shooting 20-over 236s for a tie for 64th place. The windy conditions on both Friday and Saturday proved to be a huge test for the golfers. The field’s scoring average on Saturday was 80.75.
The Lady Tigers looked like they were poised to nab a team victory heading into the third round of the tournament. They were tied with Alabama for first place with a score of 25-over 601 following the first 36 holes.”It played tough out there [Saturday], I’m not going to lie,” LSU coach Karen Bahnsen said in a news release. “It was one of those days to see who could have the least amount of big holes. We had our fair share; everyone did. We kind of settled in there and made mistakes early and did not let it get to us. We stayed patient and gave ourselves shots and gave ourselves a chance and we hung in there.”LSU couldn’t keep it going on the final day, however. The Lady Tigers shot a 12-over 300 for the final 18-holes, which was the worst final round of any team that finished in the top 10.No. 2 Auburn shot an even-par 288 to run away from LSU, TCU and Alabama in the final round. Auburn cruised to an easy seven-stroke victory over TCU, who finished in second place. The Lady Tigers will resume play Friday, April 2 for the Bryan National Collegiate. It will be their last tune-up before the Southeastern Conference Championship.
