A three-game series sweep of Auburn by the No. 14 LSU softball team extended LSU’s winning streak to a program-best 21 games and kept LSU undefeated in conference play.LSU (26-4, 8-0) broke the 2000 LSU softball team’s previous program record of 19 consecutive wins.Auburn (16-12, 2-6), in contrast, has lost five of its last six games.Sunday’s series finale started slowly for both teams as each squad went scoreless during the first four innings.LSU broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth inning when senior left fielder Rachel Mitchell doubled to left field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore second baseman Courtney Hollier.Senior center fielder Kirsten Shortridge scored on a double by junior right fielder Ashley Applegate in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mitchell added to the lead in the same frame with a two-run home run to extend the final score to 4-0.”I knew she was going to throw me inside, so I was just looking for that one specific pitch, and she happened to throw it to me,” Mitchell said. “I made sure my foot was down on time and got it out of here.”LSU freshman Rachele Fico (10-2) earned the shutout win after pitching all seven innings, giving up six hits and two walks and striking out five batters.”I took advantage of the cold weather and jammed them inside,” Fico said. LSU started the series with a bang Saturday, beating Auburn, 7-0, in game one of a doubleheader. Senior pitcher Cody Trahan (8-0) picked up her eighth win of the season after pitching all seven innings, giving up three hits and two walks. Trahan struck out six batters and continues to lead the Southeastern Conference with a 0.26 ERA.”She’s been phenomenal,” said LSU coach Yvette Girouard. “She’s throwing well right now.”The purple and gold Tigers got on the board in the second inning with two unearned runs on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly. LSU’s offense exploded with a five-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach, capped off by a two-run double from sophomore catcher Morgan Russell.Game two between the two Tiger teams seemed like another shutout for LSU until Auburn scored three runs in the last inning, making the final score 4-3.Doubles by Applegate and freshman shortstop Allison Falcon in the first two innings pushed LSU to a 2-0 early lead. The Baton Rouge Tigers carried the 2-0 lead to the fourth inning when LSU punched in two more runs on singles by Shortridge and Applegate to extend the lead to four.”We’re all really great hitters,” Applegate said. “We’re seeing the ball really well, no matter who is on the mound.”But Auburn didn’t give up.Two hit by pitches, an error by Mitchell and three hits led to three runs for Auburn. The scoring surge was highlighted by a two-RBI double by Auburn sophomore first baseman Amber Harrison.Sophomore pitcher Brittany Mack (6-2) earned the win after pitching 6 and 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run, walking one batter and striking out five.Fico earned her third save of the season when she came in with runners on second and third in the last inning and forced a ground out to sophomore first baseman Anissa Young to end the game.—-Contact Jarred LeBlanc at [email protected]
