Blake Dean is clutch.
The senior first baseman came through twice with two outs to knock in all four of the LSU baseball team’s runs in its 4-2 victory over Kansas (10-4).
Dean’s first opportunity came in the bottom of the fifth, with LSU (13-1) trailing, 2-0.
The Tigers had the bases loaded and Dean singled up the middle, driving home sophomore right fielder Mikie Mahtook and freshman third baseman Wet Delatte.
But the game-changing shot came in the seventh, when Dean launched a rocket into the right field stands for a two-run home run. Dean’s fourth home run of the year gave LSU a 4-2 advantage that it wouldn’t relinquish.
“I was expecting a fastball, but he threw me the slider and it didn’t really break very much,” Dean said. “He just kind of hung it for me.”
Junior pitcher Austin Ross started the game for the Tigers and went 6.1 innings giving up only two first inning runs.
“We needed a guy to go out there today and really compete for us and I thought he competed for us hard,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri.
Senior pitcher Paul Bertuccini (1-0) recorded his first win of the season for the Tigers and sophomore pitcher Matty Ott closed out the game for his sixth save of the season.
The Tigers tied up the weekend series at one game each, with the rubber match to come tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Alex Box Stadium.
