Trap game 101 now in session. Behind the pitching of freshman right-hander Meagan Bond, McNeese State stifled the LSU bats en route to upsetting the No. 16 softball Tigers 3-0 on Wednesday night. The loss quashed LSU’s seven-game winning streak.”We were a little too cool for school tonight,” said LSU coach Yvette Girouard. “You can’t win if you can’t touch the plate, and that’s been our nemesis all year. Unless we start swinging the bats like we’re capable of doing we’re not going to go too far. We have to get everybody’s attention here.”Bond (15-9) hurled a complete game, four-hit shutout, avenging her dismal performance against these same Tigers back on March 31. Girouard’s squad racked up five earned runs against Bond in a 7-2 victory that day.”She wasn’t doing anything special or anything different,” said LSU senior center fielder Rachel Mitchell. “We just struggled and could never find our groove. Every team has their bad days, and it was just one of ours.”Tiger sophomore right hander Brittany Mack wasn’t so stellar. Mack gave up three earned runs on four hits, walking four and striking out six. The loss dropped her record to 8-3.The offense offered no help. Coming into Wednesday’s contest, Girouard had said while the offense was a concern, as long as they were winning, it was no matter. It was a problem Wednesday.”I just think we’re so unfocused sometimes,” Girouard said. “Everybody tries to win the game with one swing instead of having a disciplined at-bat. We didn’t have very good swings on the ball. It was just a bad night.” The loss also broke a couple of streaks. Wednesday marked the first midweek game loss in the history of the new Tiger Park, where the Tigers have gone 47-10-1 in the venue’s first two seasons. The defeat also snapped LSU’s 25-game home winning streak.Mitchell said the both streaks are important to the Tigers.”Of course,” Mitchell said. “It’s our fans who come out and support us. We don’t want to disappoint them. It was a bad game.”Girouard wasn’t so concerned with the statistics. All she wants to do is play well.”I don’t think we look at it like that,” Girouard said. “We just want to go out and play well every time we go out. I don’t think we’re even aware of that streak. We just want to be playing well at the right time.”Sometimes teams can rebound from a loss like this. The Tigers looked more in shock after the game than anything.”I never thought this would happen,” Mitchell said. “They’re an NCAA team and they’re a good team, but we’re always focused and so ready to play and win. It definitely shocked me we weren’t able to pull it out.”——Contact Chris Branch at [email protected]
