The Faculty Senate discussed a proposed amendment about a faculty member’s right to assign grades Thursday.Faculty Senator Charles Delzell from the math department, said the amendment was inspired by the removal of biology professor and researcher Dominique Homberger from Biology 1001, but it didn’t affect the removal. The amendment would prohibit University administration from suspending any instructor from teaching any course or otherwise punishing or disciplining any instructor on the basis of the grades the instructor administers. The proposed amendment was postponed indefinitely until a Faculty Senate committee proposes a revision of PS-44, which states the University’s grading policy.Faculty Senate President Kevin Cope said the revision of PS-44 should be ready by September. The Faculty Senate also rejected a proposed revision of the University’s excused absence policy. The proposed revision to PS-22, which states the University’s excused absence policy, attempted to change the policy to make it clearer. The revised policy would include a sentence requiring instructors to work with students who have valid excuses so they retain an “equal opportunity for success in class and are not penalized for having missed class with a valid reason.”Faculty Athletic Representative Dydia DeLyser said it can be difficult to explain what an excused absence is, so the proposed revision was meant to clarify PS-22.Faculty Senate Vice President Pratul Ajmera said no revision to the policy was necessary, but better communication was needed at the start of each semester to make the policy clear.DeLyser said the University tried to increase awareness about PS-22 when it was revised three years ago but issues didn’t decrease.Faculty Senator George Stanley from the chemistry department said the problem with the proposed revision was it required students not be penalized for missing class with a valid reason.Stanley said students always miss out when they miss a class because they’re missing important information.—-Contact Jacob Most at [email protected].
