The No. 10 LSU gymnastics team, fresh off its tie with No. 8 Arkansas, will now finish its two-meet road trip against No. 5 Georgia on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in Athens, Ga.The Tigers (5-3-1, 2-2-1) have not beaten the Gym Dogs (3-4, 2-3) since 2005 and have not won in Stegeman Coliseum since 1983. Despite the fact LSU has only won two of its previous 15 meets against Georgia, it is one of only five programs in the country that have double-digit victories all-time against Georgia. Georgia leads the all-time series, 61-15-2.But the Tigers see an opportunity to add to their win total on Friday. The Gym Dogs, the five-time defending national champions, are still trasitioning from the retirement of long-time coach Suzanne Yoculan. Though the season has not been a typical one for the Gym Dogs — they have a losing record overall and in conference meets — they have performed exceptionally in the last three meets, averaging a 197.025.”We’re riding a wave of momentum right now,” Georgia first-year coach Jay Clark said in a news release. “The trick is to continue to ride that momentum and focus on the things we can control.”LSU is entering the meet riding high as well. The Tigers have scored above a 196 in each of their previous three meets.”We have had two great weeks of preparation in practice, and we had a good meet at Arkansas last week,” said LSU coach D-D Breaux. “We are excited about going to Athens because we feel more ready to compete now than we have all season long.”One change the Tigers must adjust to will be the size of the crowd. Georgia leads the nation in attendance, averaging 10,596 spectators per meet.LSU senior Summer Hubbard is fired up to compete in front of the large crowd.”It’s exciting,” Hubbard said. “We don’t get that kind of turnout here, so it’s our chance to go out there and shine and really represent LSU and show them what we’ve been doing.”One performer who looks to show Georgia what she has been doing is LSU senior Susan Jackson. Jackson, still the nation’s top ranked gymnast for the sixth straight week, won five consecutive all-around titles to begin the season. Jackson’s regional qualifying score average is a 39.525.The Tigers rank in the top 20 in all four apparatuses. They are ninth on the uneven bars, 11th on the vault, 13th on the balance beam and 16th on the floor exercise.Hubbard said the Georgia meet will definitely have a postseason feel. She said the Tigers’ main goal is to be agressive in the meet and compete with a sense of urgency.”We need to go in there fearless,” Hubbard said. “If we can do what we did last week and improve on some things, we’re going to do great.”–Contact Rob Landry at [email protected]
