The No. 16 LSU softball team defeated the Houston Cougars, 2-0, in the Tigers’ second game of the Tiger Invitational.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Mack (3-2) tossed a complete game shutout, striking out six including the final batter of the game.
It looked to be a high-scoring affair at the start of the game but no runs came home after the first inning. Both teams ended the game with three hits.
Senior outfielder Kirsten Shortridge singled to third, stole second and advanced to third base on a passed ball to start the bottom of the first. Junior designated player Ashley Applegate knocked her home with a single to right field.
Sophomore first baseman Anissa Young was hit by a pitch and sophomore left fielder Ashley Langoni singled up the middle to load the bases as the first inning continued. After sophomore second baseman Courtney Hollier grounded into a fielder’s choice, freshman shortstop Allison Falcon was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
The only inning the Tigers didn’t go three up and three down after the first inning was in the fifth. LSU loaded the bases and Langoni hit a shot to right field which was caught at the warning track to end the inning.
The matchup between the Cougars (6-7) and the Tigers (10-4) was originally scheduled for Friday night but was rescheduled to Saturday afternoon because of heavy rain.
