The Daily Reveille’s Web site was out of service Thursday because of a “malicious attack” on the site’s host, College Publisher Media Network. The problems began around 10 p.m. Wednesday when College Publisher began receiving complaints from its partners, said Rusty Lewis, director of College Publisher. After an initial investigation, it became obvious the problem was larger than anticipated.”It was what’s called a denial of service attack,” Lewis said. “It is a malicious attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. It’s something that’s happened to a lot of companies like Apple and Google in the past.”Lewis said the source of the attack is still unknown.College Publisher’s developers began working Wednesday night to restructure the database, although there is no way to tell how long recovery will take, Lewis said.College Publisher hosts more than 600 college newspapers, Lewis said. But the way the system is structured prevented all of them from being affected. The newspapers are spread over “pipes,” which lead to different server pools. There are about 100 papers on each pipe, and only one was affected.”I apologize to our readers for inconveniences caused by technical difficulties with our Web site,” said Nicholas Persac, editor of The Daily Reveille. “We are aware of the problems it creates for our readers, in particular those not near campus to pick up a physical copy of the paper.”The Daily Reveille continued to provide content to readers via its Facebook and Twitter accounts during the site’s downtime, Persac said. The University newspaper has been working with College Publisher to remedy the problems and hopes to have lsureveille.com recovered as soon as possible.”We’re really frustrated by this happening, but it really could not have been avoided,” Lewis said. ——To contact The Daily Reveille e-mail [email protected].
