LSU football coach Les Miles said in his weekly media teleconference Wednesday morning that redshirt freshman defensive end Sam Montgomery’s knee injury will prevent him from suiting up against Florida and the rest of the season.
“It looks like it’s a very significant knee surgery. …We wouldn’t expect he will play until next fall,” Miles said.
Montgomery had an MRI earlier this week, and Miles said the results were “pretty conclusive,” but he did not elaborate.
He said the next step is deciding on a date for Montgomery’s knee surgery.
The Greenwood, S.C., native had started all five of LSU’s games this season before he was injured in the first quarter against Tennessee. Miles initially thought the injury resulted from an illegal chop block that was not penalized, but after reviewing the game film, he said the block on Montgomery was legal.
“The opportunity to be injured was certainly there, but I don’t know how you can throw a flag on a tackle who had intent to contact but didn’t,” Miles said.
