The soulful Raphael Saadiq will bring a dose of old school R&B to the Voodoo Experience during his 9:15 p.m. set on Friday.
Saadiq is a member of the multiplatinum-selling R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné! and has produced music for legions of music’s biggest stars, like Mary J. Blige, John Legend, TLC and Joss Stone.
But aside from those high-profile accomplishments, Saadiq is also a standout solo artist. He’s produced four solo albums, and his latest, 2008’s “The Way I See It,” is a glorious nod to retro soul. And Saadiq’s music has a strong Louisiana connection. “Big Easy,” one song from “The Way I See It,” features the Rebirth Brass Band and chronicles New Orleans’ struggle Hurricane Katrina.
With a voice that’s perfect for the music he writes and a busy, funky backing band, Saadiq is a guaranteed good time at Voodoo. He may be scheduled during the same time slot as headliner Muse, but fans of jazz and soul may want to consider taking a detour to see Saadiq bring down the house.
Raphael Saadiq performs at 9:15 p.m. on Voodoo’s Bingo! stage on Friday, Oct. 29.
