Student Government Senate adopted a logo and motto at Wednesday’s meeting.
The logo and motto were voted on by 113 members of SG. There were two logo and three motto options. The logo won in a 56-44 vote.
The logo was approved by the Office of Trademarking, Manship School of Mass Communication Senator Zac Lemoine said.
The motto option adopted is “Where Your Voice is Heard.” Other options were “Real Students, Real Results” and “Your Student Government.”
The logo is a purple and gold sketch of Free Speech Circle. The options were designed by SG Graphic Designer Lance Bordelon.
The Temporary SG Branding Committee worked on both the logo and motto during the summer.
The committee is composed of Bordelon, Lemoine, Speaker of the Senate Brooksie Bonvillain, SG President J Hudson, SG Vice President Dani Borel, SG Chief Justice Danielle Rushing, College of Science Senator Brandon Jones and SG Director of Academics Jeffrey Wale.
The voting ballot had a section for input on the logo. Most comments expressed what members liked and didn’t like, Lemoine said.
SG was initially worried students wouldn’t know the sketch was of Free Speech Circle.
“Students will learn to associate the logo with SG,” Lemoine said.
Bordelon said the committee started brainstorming with six or seven logos before deciding on the two that were put to a vote.
“We started with a paw and an oak tree,” Bordelon said.
The committee wanted to make sure it left a legacy when designing the logo, Bordelon said.
“The power of branding is doing, not just being,” Bordelon said.
The Temporary SG Branding Committee will look for ways to make the logo available to people without spending money, such as possibly having it appear on University screensavers, Lemoine said.
The committee is also working on an SG stylebook with options to the replace Louisiana State University at the bottom of the logo with the branch of SG. The stylebook will also have common style errors, like a hyphen in Vice President, Lemoine said.
“We are trying to explore avenues that don’t cost anything,” Lemoine said.
SG will phase out the current letterhead and other items where the logo will be placed.
The senate also approved a member to the Student Required Fee Committee on Wednesday.
Senate voted Speaker Pro Tempore Aaron Caffarel as the Student Required Fee Committee representative. The vote was between Caffarel and E.J. Ourso College of Business Sen. Emily Landry.
At the end of Wednesday’s meeting, Bonvillain closed by saying she knows Senate hasn’t done much beyond tinkering with bylaws, but debatable issues are soon to come.
