Even though rugby is seen as a very unconventional sport for a woman to play, there is no shortage of hype and excitement for the upcoming season for the women’s club rugby team. These ladies are ready to begin competition, and they will do so with their upcoming match against Elon on September 11th. “I am looking forward to our fall lineup,” Erin Yow, a senior in biological engineering said. “We have some tough games on our schedule; The Citadel, College of Charleston to name a few.” But the main tournament that Yow has circled on her calendar is the Rucktoberfest event in the first part of October. “We have a state tournament at the end of October and our favorite tournament at the beginning of October, Rucktoberfest,” Yow said. “It’s a fun time had by everyone. It’s a social tournament, but still is very competitive. We hang out with different teams from all over and have a great time.” Katy Walls, a senior in communication media, is very excited about the upcoming newcomers and freshman that have been added to the team this year. “I can’t wait to watch our rookies get their feet wet and play in their first rugby game,” Walls said. “I remember how exciting yet confusing my first game was. However, all of our rookies have been working exponentially hard at practice for the past few weeks. “Rugby isn’t a sport that comes easy and it usually takes some time to settle in. I’m one hundred percent confident that they will make our team proud when game day rolls around.” Yow is also very excited about seeing the new players play in their first live game and will be looking forward to this batch of newcomers due to the fact that this will be her last season with the team. “This is my last fall season with these ladies, as I am a senior graduating in May,” Yow said. “I will miss them so much but I am excited for this batch of rookies because I think they will mesh well with the dynamic and be strong replacements for all the seniors who will be leaving” The team also hosted a charity car wash with the men’s club rugby team on September 3 to help raise money for their bid for the charity Shack-a-Thon, which is at the end of this month. “We participated in SAT [Shack-a-Thon] last year and had a great time doing it, so as a team we decided to raise the bar for this year,” Walls said. “At the car wash we had as many as twenty people present at one time and raised just shy of $300. It was a great team bonding experience while simultaneously performing a community service.”
