The LSU football team’s offense, especially the passing game, was kept at bay in the Tigers’ second scrimmage during fall camp.
Junior quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee were a combined 8-for-18 with 145 total passing yards in the team’s first scrimmage Saturday.
The two aired it out during LSU’s second scrimmage Thursday afternoon, racking up five touchdowns and 275 yards.
But Jefferson and Lee were given more attempts the second go-round, completing 22 out of 40 passes, and throwing two interceptions.
“I felt like Jordan made all the checks and hit some passes,” Miles said. “I thought Jarrett Lee threw well and again, did some things that he really needed to do.”
Miles said both quarterbacks saw action with the first-team offense, but Jefferson got more first-unit reps than Lee.
Jefferson was under center for a four-play, 65-yard touchdown drive during a two-minute drill part of the scrimmage. The St. Rose native found senior wide receiver Terrence Toliver in the end zone for a 37-yard touchdown.
DOWNS CARTED OFF
Sophomore defensive tackle Josh Downs went down with an injury during the scrimmage and was carted off the field.
Miles said he was not sure how long Downs will be out but added that there were “no significant injuries” from the scrimmage.
MURPHY SCORES TWICE
The Tigers focused on red zone and tight zone situations during the scrimmage and ended with a two-minute drill and a few other late-game scenarios.
Senior running back Richard Murphy and junior tailback Stevan Ridley both found the end zone with Murphy scoring twice and recording 61 yards on six carries.
“Ridley ran the ball well and Richard Murphy had a big day,” Miles said. “These guys are getting eight to 10 carries per scrimmage, and I like what they were doing when they are getting their opportunity.”
Freshman punter Brad Wing booted a 65-yard punt and senior kicker Josh Jasper connected on 5-of-7 field goals.
LOSTON STANDS OUT
Redshirt freshman safety Craig Loston dominated the defensive stats.
The Houston, Texas, native had 6.5 tackles, one sack and an interception.
“Craig Loston played very well,” Miles said. “He made a couple of tackles that appeared to me to be in the center of the field, and the contact appeared to be pretty significant.”
Miles also complimented redshirt freshman defensive end Barkevious Mingo, who had three tackles, and junior defensive end Ken Adams, who recorded 3.5 tackles.
The team will have Friday off and then will practice twice on Saturday.
The Tigers will undergo a special teams workout on Sunday before classes begin Monday.
