LSU senior running back Richard Murphy was announced today as a candidate for the Doak Walker Award, the honor given to college football’s best running back.
Murphy is one of 49 total candidates and six in the Southeastern Conference. The field will be narrowed to semifinalists Nov. 10, and the selection committee will vote on finalists Nov. 22. The winner will be announced Dec. 9 on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards.
Murphy is returning to the LSU backfield for his senior season after injuring his knee against Vanderbilt in 2009 and missing the rest of the season. The Rayville native has rushed for 442 yards and two touchdowns in 29 career games. His 7,059 rushing yards at Rayville High School is fifth all-time in Louisiana history.
