The Department of Foreign Language and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences will have to cut $700,000 and 14 instructors to accommodate next year’s budget cuts, according to department chair Emily Batinski.
Programs being cut entirely include Japanese, Swahili, Portuguese and Russian. Instructors from German, Italian and Classics will also be let go.
The instructors’ employment will end as of January 2011.
College of Arts and Sciences Interim Dean Gaines Foster said it was a tough decision and a “loss for everybody.”
