LSU Day will be smaller than originally planned in light of its rescheduling to coincide with Homecoming on Nov. 13.LSU Day is the University’s celebration of its 150th anniversary. The event was originally scheduled for April 25 but was postponed because of weather issues.Sesquicentennial events will take place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and have been worked into the previously scheduled Homecoming activities.”The footprint for LSU Day will be smaller than prior because of everything going on with football that day,” said Aaron Looney, University Relations editor.Looney said LSU Day will fit easily into Homecoming. Not only will people who would normally attend the event be present, but people who are tailgating and visiting the University will have a chance to take part as well, he said.”There will be a lot of alumni on campus, so it will be a big advantage,” said Veronica Shaffer, administrative coordinator for Campus Life.Austin McDonald, communication studies doctoral student, said combining LSU Day with Homecoming is appropriate.”Homecoming is an opportunity to do well against a not-so-great team and celebrate school pride,” he said. “I can’t think of another time it would be better.”Erin Percevault, landscape architecture freshman, said LSU Day will take away from the Homecoming celebration.”I feel like they are lumping two celebrations that should be separate,” Percevault said. Most LSU Day events will be held at the UREC Student Recreation Complex. Other events will be held at the Parade Ground and Student Union.Paige Benoit, psychology junior, said many fans might get angry if their tailgating spot is taken over by LSU Day.Looney said many colleges and departments on campus will have booths at LSU Day to demonstrate the work they do. “The Red Stick International Animation Festival will have a presence at LSU Day with different showcases,” Looney said. Also featured at LSU Day will be America’s largest king cake, a project by the Sesquicentennial Student Subcommittee.More than 600 feet of cake was baked in April for the originally scheduled LSU Day event. Because dough for the whole cake had already been thawed and partially baked when the event was postponed, the king cake was completed and donated to the Baton Rouge Food Bank.Another cake will be baked for the rescheduled event and will be distributed on the Parade Ground during a large tailgate including several organizations and live music organized by The Student Activity Board, said Iftekhar Rouf, subcommittee chairman. Capital Gains, a cover band consisting of three University teachers and an alumnus, will perform on the main stage at the UREC SRC. The College of Music and Dramatic Arts will have performances in the Union. Some events for children will be the College of Education’s Storytime Village, where volunteers will read to children. The College of Agriculture will have an animal farm.Shaffer said Campus Life helps with Homecoming, but she is not sure if it will have a booth at LSU Day.All booths are recruiting their own volunteers, and students can sign up through their respective colleges, Looney said in an email.Benoit said she is planning to volunteer at the Psychology Department booth to talk about Psychology Club and different aspects of the department.”Students can sign up as general volunteers beginning in September,” Looney said.Looney said the University does not currently have a rain plan for the event. LSU Day is a free celebration.
