Unlike LSU, Mississippi State was not going to let losses string together.
The Bulldogs fought off an impressive second-half performance from LSU to trounce the Tigers, 67-51, Saturday in Starkville, Miss. The win stopped the team’s two-game conference skid.
Senior forward Tasmin Mitchell scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers (9-12, 0-7) and didn’t get much help. Junior guard Bo Spencer, the next highest scorer for LSU, logged nine points.
Meanwhile, Mississippi State (16-4, 4-2) saw a balanced offensive output. Junior guard Ravern Johnson scored 15 points, senior guard Barry Stewart notched 12 points, junior guard Phil Turner had 12 points and senior forward Jarvis Varnado contributed 11 points.
‘That was the group that knocked us out of the [Southeastern Conference] tournament,’ said LSU coach Trent Johnson in his postgame radio interview. ‘Their perimeter players are extremely skilled and were a bad matchup for us.’
