LSU will retire the jersey of former women’s basketball player Seimone Augustus, the Athletic Department announced Saturday.
Augustus will be the first female athlete in school history to have her jersey retired. LSU athletes normally must wait five years before being nominated for the honor, but the LSU Athletic Council unanimously waived the waiting period despite Augustus finishing her career at LSU in 2006.
Her jersey will be formally retired on Jan. 24, when LSU plays Tennessee in the PMAC.
“This is an honor of the highest measure and one which Seimone Augustus truly deserves,” LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a news release. “Seimone distinguished herself during her college career as one of the greatest student-athletes in the country and she continues to be a tremendous representative of LSU. This is a particularly significant honor because she is the first female student-athlete in LSU history to have her jersey retired.”
Augustus will join eight other athletes at LSU who have had their jerseys retired. Those players include former men’s basketball stars Bob Pettit, Pete Maravich, Rudy Macklin and Shaquille O’Neal, football stars Billy Cannon and Tommy Casanova, and baseball pitcher Ben McDonald and coach Skip Bertman, respectively.
Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, came to LSU in 2002 and left as the most decorated Lady Tiger basketball player of all time. She was a two-time National Player of the Year award winner, National Freshman of the Year winner and a four-time All-American.
Augustus racked up 2,702 points at LSU, second most in school history. She later became the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft by the Minnesota Lynx in 2006.
