It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done.LSU’s gymnastics team opened up its 2010 season with a 194.375 to 190.625 victory against Maryland in the PMAC on Friday night. The No. 6 Tigers (1-0) took home individual titles on all four apparatuses, with senior Susan Jackson taking home two of those titles and the all-around title, the sixth of her career. The Tigers struggled on all four events, but their score compared to the 194.900 they posted in their first meet last season. With the victory, LSU improved to 6-0 all time against Maryland.LSU coach D-D Breaux said she was pleased overall with the team’s performance, especially with tough judging and a few injuries that limited some of the gymnasts’ difficulties.”The meet went just as expected,” Breaux said. “We weren’t ready in a few events, and we were pushing ourselves to be ready. But there is nothing that took place tonight that can’t be fixed in a few practices.”The Tigers started off the meet with a bang when senior Kayla Rogers led off the night with a 9.875 on the vault to win her second career individual title (the other came on the floor).Rogers, who performed on all events except the beam, finished the night with the first-place finish on the vault and second-place finished on both the bars and floor.”I was pretty pleased tonight,” Rogers said. “I was a little nervous going in, though … That first spot is a very important spot, and I know I’m going to have to be consistent all year in that spot.”The rest of the team didn’t follow Rogers’ suit on the vault, as the team ended with a 48.725 on the vault, statistically the team’s best event last year with a 49.277 average.Maryland posted a 48.625 on the vault. The Tigers came out stronger on the bars, however, as senior Sabrina Franceschelli posted a 9.725 and Rogers followed suit with a 9.800. But once again, the team fell flat on its face – literally – when senior Summer Hubbard took a hard fall on her nose on her first flip in the fifth slot for LSU.Jackson picked the Tigers up in the final slot, posting a 9.825 to win the event, while Rogers finished second. LSU ended up with a 48.400 on the event, counting Hubbard’s fall because sophomore Nikki Lyons also fell in her first meet back from a season-ending ankle injury last season. The Terrapins posted a 47.525 on the bars to start the night. In the third rotation, LSU took home a 48.275 on the beam.Hubbard followed up her fall on the uneven bars with a solid performance on the beam, a 9.800, that earned her the title, the fifth of her career in the event.Freshman Shelby Prunty took home a 9.600 in her first action as a Tiger.”It was an eye-opening experience for the freshman tonight,” Breaux said. “Shelby did a great job on the beam tonight, though.”The Tigers then posted a 48.975 on the floor to finish up the night.Rogers finished off her outstanding night with a 9.825 to place second overall in the event.Jackson won the event with a 9.900.The Tigers head to Las Vegas next week to compete in the Lady Luck Invitational against Kentucky, Arizona State and Missouri. – – – -Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
