The Supreme Court has ruled in a 5-to-4 decision that putting spending limits on contributions to political candidates by corporations would be a violation of the First Amendment’s right to free speech.
Justice Anthony M. Kennedy explained the majority’s decision, saying the First Amendment should protect contributions as they fall under the umbrella of free political speech.
The dissent, read by Justice John Paul Stevens, said corporate speech should not be given the same treatment as that of human beings.
