The infamous freshman 15 can strike anyone, and it’s so easy to fall into when there’s a Chick-Fil-A and McDonald’s on campus. I’m here to tell you that sometimes it’s better to put down the greasy bag and explore the healthier options LSU has to offer.
I love a good hamburger and fries, but I can’t expect to have a well-balanced meal like I did at home. I may not even have the time because of my busy class schedule and homework. However, there are delicious and healthy food options around campus that you can go to right after class or for a quick meal.
1. Pita Pit
Instead of going to Buffalo Wild Wings, Pita Pit is right next door and offers multiple healthy and vegetarian options. Prices are also reasonable for a wrap that will fill you up.
Their menu includes hummus wraps, falafel wraps, chicken pesto and many more. This is a great place to go to right after class for lunch because it’s only one street off campus.
2. The Biq Squeezy
The Big Squeezy is another healthy option, and it’s now located in the Union. This place offers different juices that can help with digestion, detoxing or if you just need an energy boost.
They also serve açaí bowls—basically a smoothie in a bowl with granola and fruits. You can get all of this at The Big Squeezy’s new location on the second floor of the Union.
3. Tropical Smoothie
If you don’t mind the drive, Tropical Smoothie on Lee Drive has tasty smoothies and meals that will make the short drive worth it.
There are different smoothie options that you can pair with a flatbread, quesadilla, bowl, wrap or sandwich.
4. Playa Bowl
Playa Bowl recently opened in the Arlington Marketplace. The shop specializes in unique açaí bowls. It offers different bases for their bowls such as coconut, chia, banana, oatmeal and pitaya. The shop also offers fresh smoothies.
5.Frutta Bowls
If you live in Nicholson Gateway, Frutta Bowls is only a short walk to a healthy breakfast. You can get açaí, pitaya and kale bowls, or you can get toast with toppings such as avocado or hummus.
They also serve hot oatmeal bowls that you can enjoy for a well-balanced breakfast on the go.
6. Subway
There are two Subways you can go to on or around campus, and one of them is in the basement of Foster Hall.
If you want a quick sandwich right after class, then Subway is the place to go. I can’t deny a good Subway sandwich with my favorite baked chips. It’s not a far walk, and it’s something quick to have if you only have an hour break between your classes.
