The LSU Swimming and Diving team is having an exceptional season and does not intend to stop any time soon. The Tigers are coming off of a 181-69 win against Incarnate Word and a 160-96 win against Delta State.
While every victory is certainly special, Saturday’s victory over Incarnate Word and Delta State meant a little more as it was Senior Day for the Tigers. Seventeen seniors were honored Saturday and eight of those Tiger seniors won individual events.
“It’s all about transferring the culture baton, if you will,” said diving coach Doug Shaffer. “The underclassmen learn a lot from the seniors and our seniors have done an amazing job at showing them the right way to carry yourself and the right way to be a part of this program. So, there is not a lot of coaching when a new class comes in because the standard has been set by the senior classes that have come and gone. They have done an amazing job of showing them the LSU way.”
LSU divers Juan Celaya-Hernandez and Aimee Wilson were named SEC Divers of the Week after their incredible performance at Saturday’s race.
“This is a terrific recognition for both Juan and Aimee,” Shaffer said. “They really stepped up this past weekend with excellent performances in both of their events. I am proud of their accomplishments.”
Next up, the Tigers head to College Station, Texas, as they prepare to face SEC West foe Texas A&M. The Aggies are back in action after a 161-90 victory over SMU and a second place finish in the Orange Bowl Classic. This matchup has turned into one of the best SEC rivalries since the Aggies joined the SEC back in 2012.
With the end of the regular season quickly approaching, this race will be extremely important for LSU. This will serve as a preview of what’s to come before the Tigers head into the SEC Championships starting on Feb. 19 in Athens, Georgia.
