Stars: 5/5
“Monster House” was one of those movies that shaped my childhood. I sometimes get vivid flashbacks of some scenes from the movie. “Monster House” is a highlight of my Halloween memories and I loved whenever it came on Cartoon Network.
The movie is basically about three kids who go into a creepy house in the neighborhood. The house is owned by a scary old man, Nebbercracker, who confiscates any toy that lands on his yard. It turns out that the house is actually living, and the house is the Nebbercracker’s wife who died on Halloween night.
“Monster House” has a great plot and an even better plot twist. The story is still sad after years of not seeing the movie. I may be blinded by nostalgia, but the movie is still good. I think after 14 years the movie still stands.
The story is also original. Horror movies usually use the same slasher and haunted mansion tropes, but I think this Halloween movie is great at being original. The house is alive, but the house turns out to be the owner’s wife. It’s a good story and should be praised for that.
“Monster House” also has some interesting aspects that still stands out today.
The animation looks weird, but I think it’s fitting for the movie. I’ve been spoiled with great animation works that are now popular today, but it’s nice to look back and see the improvement.
“Monster House” also has an interesting cast. They had Kevin James, Mitchel Musso, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Steve Buscemi. It’s cool now to see this cast when I didn’t understand how big the cast members were as a kid. It’s an interesting mix of actors for an interesting movie.
Going back to our childhood memories can be bittersweet. Halloween was one of the days out of the year that I looked forward to the most. Although, Christmas is still No.1, it was still fun going on Cartoon Network and enjoying days of great Halloween movies, and “Monster House” still stands out to me.
