The day time rain may have been a foreshadowing to the Tigers 7 o’clock game where they poured on seven runs in the seventh inning to stretch out their 2-1 lead against Mississippi state.
”The clutch hit by Watson to extend the lead, and then clutch hit, after clutch hit, after clutch hit, and after that, we were able to break the ball game open,” LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri said.
“All those runs came with two outs? That’s unbelievable,” Coach Mainieri noted.
“That seventh innings, Hal came through with a two-out double. That’s huge, and for me to come in behind him and get a base hit, and then him scoring. That gets a little rally going, and we end up scoring seven runs in that inning. That’s huge for the team,” center fielder Zach Watson commented. Watson had his third home run on the night, but Zack Hess also had a comeback game among the Tigers explosive evening.
After a 25 pitch first inning Hess only gave up one run and threw 10 strikeouts in just over six innings.
“Beginning of the game, I was just trying to come around some pitches, and I wasn’t staying through the ball. That’s always been my one thing mechanically that if I’m not doing right, then I’m going to struggle. I just kind of had to go back to some mental cues that I use to make sure that I’m not doing that and that I’m staying through my pitches. Once I did that, I just kind of settled in from there,” Hess commented on his night.
“Zack ,I like to say, is an animal. He comes out there with full enthusiasm. He’s locked in, and he’s ready to go. He’s got one goal: to get everybody out. If I was coach, he’d be the hardest one to take out of the game because he’s scary when he’s pitching,” Watson said about the sophomore pitcher.
The Tigers continue their weekend series against Mississippi State on Friday with first pitch at 7 p.m.
