LSU softball defeated both Purdue and Florida Atlantic University in a doubleheader during day two of the LSU Inviational.
Sophomore infielder Amanda Doyle led the Tigers past Purdue in LSU’s first game of the day. In the Tigers 6-2 victory, Doyle went 3-3 batting with one double, one homerun, and three RBIs. Doyle added on to her tremendous season, and is currently at .462 batting average.
“It just so happened that the right pitch was there, and I just hit it in the right place,” Doyle said regarding her homerun.
Sophomore outfielder Aliyah Andrews went 2-3 batting, and junior second baseman Becca Shulte drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The Tigers had eight hits against Purdue.
Sophomore pitcher Maribeth Gorsuch started in the circle, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Gorsuch was relieved by senior Allie Walljasper, who pitched 3.2 innings and only allowed one hit.
Pursue pitcher Sydney Bates pitched six innings for the Boilermakers, allowing five earned runs and eight hits.
In the second game of the day, LSU and FAU faced off in what appeared a defensive battle.
LSU’s bats got hot in the bottom of the 6th inning, where senior centerfielder Emily Griggs hit a triple with bases loaded, giving her three RBIs for the game.
Amanda Doyle also had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the 6th inning.
Senior Pitcher Carley Hoover had another dominating day in the circle. Hoover allowed only six hits and one run and six strikeouts after pitching a full game,
“We tried all week to get into an aggressive mentality, and I think we swung really aggressively today,” Torina said.
The Tigers will resume play tomorrow at 12 PM against FAU again.
