What would bring legendary LSU athletes from all over on a Saturday afternoon to, not play football, but to play kickball in the Baby Cakes stadium in Metairie, Louisiana?
Only the first annual Tyrann Mathieu Kickball Classic. After all, the Honey Badger gets what the Honey Badger wants right?
And if the Honey Badger wants an LSU family reunion, that’s what he’ll get.
“It’s been fun trying to recruit guys from LSU, even from the NFL. Like I said, hopefully it’s a great turnout today,” Mathieu said.
“Nothing like it. Nothing like being back home,” former Tiger and current New York Jets safety Jamal Adams said. “This is my first charity event. It’s for my brother Tyrann. It’s a wonderful cause. We’re excited to be here and have fun.”
“I think it’s great that he’s making an effort to come back to a place that really helped cement him to become the ‘Honey Badger,’ the dominant ‘Honey Badger,'” former Tiger and current Winter and Summer Olympian Lolo Jones said. “He’s bringing a lot of the former LSU athletes. I mean this is probably the first time I’ve seen a lot of these athletes together in one place.”
Although the kickball rosters were filled with former LSU athletes, one current Tiger made his way down to support Mathieu. Senior safety John Battle wasn’t on the field, but was behind a camera.
“Yeah, this is a little side hobby that I like to do that I picked up over the off-season, just taking pictures,” Battle said. “This is a great event to come do it, you know, to support my guys. Tyrann comes back. He gives us words of wisdom on and off the field. It’s a ‘DBU’ thing. It’s been passed down from generation to generation.”
